Be strong and courageous
One of the things I love about Joshua 1 is that sometimes, we are all like Joshua – shy, terrified, not sure how much we can do, and wondering if we have the capacities. God knew that Joshua had watched and learned from Moses, so he wasn’t “empty” as it were, but he needed to tell Joshua of that strength. Sometimes, we don’t know how much strength we have until someone else comes along to tell us – most especially, God.
In verse 6, God says, “Be strong and courageous, for you are the one…”
Did you see that? You are chosen, but I need you to rise up to the task. Get this straight: God doesn’t call us to things we are ready for, or things we already have capacities in; he always gives us a bigger picture beyond our ambitions. Even when it is a God-given talent that comes to you quite easily, when God gives you a vision that requires the use of that talent, you realize that it is really beyond you, and all you is a “little talent” with no directions. Then you realize you NEED Him.
So, what is God’s requirement for success?
“Study this Book of Instruction continually, meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”Joshua 1:8 NLT
As he was with Joshua, God is with you wherever you go. If you read the remaining verses of this chapter, you realize that Joshua then gave a charge to the Israelites after hearing from God – it was the beginning of a mission. What are you taking the plunge to do now? Remember that God is with you!
