Trust is what makes the roots go deep
Today's Scripture: Matthew 13:3-23
Apart from our founding scripture in Matthew 13:21, the tagline that this devotional goes by is an African Proverb that says, “When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.” As believers, the wind will come – not once, not twice – but to each and every phase of our lives, because the wind is a part of the phase. However, the reason the wind should not matter is because you have deep roots.
I hear you thinking, sometimes, deep rooted trees are uprooted by hurricanes or tornadoes. Well, yes, but not your type of tree. The One who is sold out to God is deeply rooted, too rooted to be harassed by any wind whatsoever. One of the key signs of a deeply rooted believer is trust in God. Remember this post? Trust is what makes the roots go deep. And you know what is amazing? Paul makes us understand in Romans 12:3 that each of us have been given a measure of faith as believers. How amazing. That means you have capacity to stand in God, trusting. However, this measure of faith has every potential to grow. Now, as a new creature, you have every capacity to trust God. You are a deep rooted believer because you have been planted from the moment you chose to believe in Jesus Christ.
But what keeps your roots deep?
The Bible said faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. So, you say, I hear God’s Word, but I don’t think my roots are deep. Matthew 13:19-23 says,
19 When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn’t take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person’s heart. This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road.
20-21 “The seed cast in the gravel—this is the person who hears and instantly responds with enthusiasm. But there is no soil of character, and so when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives, there is nothing to show for it.
22 “The seed cast in the weeds is the person who hears the kingdom news, but weeds of worry and illusions about getting more and wanting everything under the sun strangle what was heard, and nothing comes of it.
23 “The seed cast on good earth is the person who hears and takes in the News, and then produces a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.”MATTHEW 13:19-23 MSG
What those verses reveal to us are the different stages involved in making the Word kindle faith in our lives. Until you consciously allow the Word of God to settle in your heart, it does not produce trust in God. When this is done however, even in the midst of the worst storms, you are deeply rooted!
Prayer Point: Father, by the dogged attention to and revealed understanding of your Word, help me to strengthen my faith in you to the point where I no longer have to waver as soon as the winds come. Like the eagle, help me to soar above the wind, trusting that you will keep me in perfect peace in Jesus name.
