The Lord your God will
drive those nations out
ahead of you little by little.
You will not clear them
away all at once,
otherwise the wild animals
would multiply too quickly for you
- Deuteronomy 7:22 NLT
Today's Scripture: Deuteronomy 7:1,21-23
Welcome to September! This week, we’ll be talking about trusting God’s timing. Today, as we read from the above scripture, it is important to realize a few things. God cares about us and about our successes so much that He would ensure that no harm comes to us in the process if we trust to do things His way. In today’s scripture, God had promised the Israelites to bring them into an amazing land. That meant everything, because being in God’s right place at God’s right time and acting according to God’s own will is highly important for every believer.
Verse 1 says,
“When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are greater and more numerous than you…”
Then God gave them a number of dos and don’ts. The absolute fulfillment of this promise was contingent on the people’s absolute obedience of God’s instructions, but we will not dwell there today.
Verse 21 says,
“No, do not be afraid of those nations, for the Lord your God is among you, and he is a great and awesome God.”
We can understand from this verse that God’s promises are indeed larger than life, and we may be tempted to fear or even doubt the possibility of that promise. But before God brings us there, alongside with knowing the promise and obeying God’s instructions, we must also trust in His magnificence.
Verse 22 says,
“The Lord your God will drive those nations out ahead of you little by little. You will not clear them away all at once, otherwise the wild animals would multiply too quickly for you.”
Now, this verse confirms God’s promise, taking into consideration our obedience and trust, but also warns us that everything will not happen at once. Yes, God will make you the minister he has called you to be, Yes, God will make you a tycoon as he has shown you, Yes, God will give you wonderful children and a blessed family, but Yes, He will do it little by little. You are not going to arrive at the peak of your career in one day – that is not the principle. Yes, you can have days of divine speed where things that would have taken you 20 years are done in 5 months, but that is still not the best of God for you. It will take you closer to God’s Plan for you than you ever were, but the principle is LITTLE BY LITTLE.
Finally verse 23 says,
“But the Lord your God will hand them over to you. He will throw them into complete confusion until they are destroyed.”
You might interpret this as “it doesn’t matter how “long” it takes; God’s will will be done!”
Today, let us come into a knowing that what we should check is where we are in God’s Plan, if we are doing the right thing in accordance to His will, and not asking him, “When?” When we do this, we separate ourselves from anxiety and bring ourselves into greater intimacy where true joy lives.
Prayer Point: Lord Jesus, I yield it all to you now. By the power of your Holy Spirit and by my decision to follow your instructions, help me to trust your timing for my life. Help me not to measure my life with the yardsticks of other people’s progress. Rather, help me to focus on being in your right place at your right time for my life in Jesus name. Amen.
