The Perfect Law of Liberty II

If someone believes
they have a relationship
with God
but fails to guard his words
then his heart is drifting away
and his religion is shallow and empty.

James 1:26 TPT
Today's Scripture: James 1:26-27

Yesterday, we looked at verse 25 of the first chapter of James. We made it clear that as much as freedom is a much desired position for every person on the face of the earth, there is only one perfect law that grants freedom. That is God’s Own Word. Remember Jesus said that when we know the truth, the truth SHALL set us free? Yes, that’s the summary of it all.

Today, we will be looking at two keys in the first chapter of James which tell us how our freedom in Christ is “proven.” In verse 26, the Bible says, “If someone believes they have a relationship with God but fails to guard his words then his heart is drifting away and his religion is shallow and empty.” One of the changes that the word of God brings to our lives is the grace to be free from being a slave to our emotions. Anger is a human emotion, but it can be curbed. Careless speech is only human too, but the Spirit of God that lives in you and I can curb it also. When we find ourselves constantly living in God’s Word, we are easily able to guard our speech. We do not react to just anything and just anyhow, because we have a “measuring tool” for our lives.

Secondly, verse 27 says, “true spirituality that is pure in the eyes of our Father God is to make a difference in the lives of the orphans, and widows in their troubles, and to refuse to be corrupted by the world’s values.” More than the verse clearly spells it out that we should be blessings to whoever is in need, it also tells us between the lines to make a difference in the world and refuse to be corrupted by the world’s values. This was how Jesus modeled life for us. He knew what he stood for, and he did so unashamedly. In the same vein, we should stand for God and do so without apologies. And where do we begin? By gazing deeply into the perfect law of liberty.

I pray that as you spend time in God’s Word this month and this year, your life will be transformed and freedom will be a daily song.

Action Point: Spend time in God’s Word today, and as you understand God’s instructions to you, do as it says.
