True independence is absolute dependence on God.
Today’s Scripture: James 4:7
The lie that you have heard is to live like an orphan. The world encourages it – we are prompted to be independent, void of help or support, and to be self made. The culture of the Bible is however different. In the culture of Christ, your true independence and my true independence is defined by our absolute dependence on God. We are to choose yielding over striving and to acknowledge our flaws rather than cover them up.
The Bible verse above tells us to surrender, to be humble and to let God work His will in us. The feeling or idea that we do not need God is rooted in pride. However, if we choose to obey God’s rules, we learn the language of surrender.
Friend, all that you would ever need is on the other side of controlling your life. It is on the side of letting it all go to the One who can handle them. Proverbs 3:5-12 in the Message Version says, “Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life!”
Do you see that? It pays to surrender.
Prayer: Father, I yield it all to you. Help me to yield when I am close to striving to do it all alone. Help me to pay attention to your instructions and to forsake my emotions. Help me to always choose You over me and to choose Your Word over the world in Jesus’ name. Amen.
